GETTING IN THE Pe-2 AS PILOT
I learnt this by trial and error because the "steering wheel" icon doesn't come up, you have to get into the pilots seat like this-

1- run up to the Pe-2 and slide the mouse around but all you'll get is the crosshairs icon like this, that's fine if you want to be the gunner, otherwise go to step 2..

2- slide the mouse around til the crosshairs icon vanishes...

...then click the mousewheel to make this menu and the steering wheel icon come up. Select "get in as pilot"...

...and you'll be in there ready to go. Toggle 1st/3rd person views if you like with Enter(num)

PS- I used a schreck guy for the test to show that any type of unit can fly a plane, he doesn't have to be a pilot type.

Tactical tip, voluntarily bailing out of planes-
In multiplayer, if it's too far to drive a tank or vehicle from your base to the objective and the game doesn't have teleport or train or paradrop travel options, hop in a plane if there is one and fly there.
Then after bombing and strafing the enemy, bail out (click mousewheel and select 'Eject') and fight on foot as an infantryman, leaving the plane to crash.
Don't feel too bad at writing off the plane, it soon respawns back at base for somebody else to hop into.

PS- remember, you don't have to be a pilot to fly, you can be an ordinary infantryman or anything else.
Before taking off, I first of all get a snipers rifle, magazines and half-a-dozen AT-grenades from an ammo crate so that when I bail out into enemy territory I'm tooled up like Rambo and can go looking for trouble..

TAKING OFF

You can use a joystick, mouse or keys, or a combination of them, i'll use the Default keys for this tutorial and although I'm using a Stuka the same takeoff procedure applies to all the planes in IF.
There's the Stuka, and notice that i (as Player) am a schreck guy to show that you can be ANY unit, you don't have to be a pilot

The Stuka is boarded from the left-hand side, click mousewheel when the steering wheel icon appears-

The view will be external 3rd person like this-

Hit *(num) to get the freelook view and slide the mouse around to get a good idea of situational awareness. The runway stretches away towards a treeline so we'll have to do a 90-degree turn to line up for takeoff-

Now the (gulp) tricky part..
Hit *(num) again to toggle off freelook and hit 'Q' to start the engine. Hold down Q until the plane starts moving, then release it and stroke the mouse right several times to rudder the plane around til you're lined up with the runway.
Go to freelook again *(num) if you like, to check you're positioned ok-

You can stay in external 3rd person view or hit Enter(num) to get in the cockpit like this-

Hold down Q to increase engine power and keep holding it down. You can apply a touch of rudder (mouse stroke) to keep straight as you hurtle down the runway, and when your speed gets above 100 (arrowed) apply a touch of up elevator with the mouse, or with the down arrow key and you should comfortably clear the trees at the end of the runway like this. I use freelook *(num) as here because I don't like being cooped up in the cockpit for takeoff. DON'T CLIMB TOO STEEPLY or you'll slow down and stall.
Finally release the Q key when your speed has built up to at least 150 kts, or hold it down longer if you want to go faster-

GUNNERS POSITIONS

If a teammate invites you to take the Stuka rear gun while he flies, and you trust his piloting abilities, hop in from the right-hand side like this-

And this is the gunners view. Hit 0(num) to try another view, I like this one best)

The only other plane in IF with gunners is the Pe-2, it has two gun positions, one behind the pilot and a ventral position.
To get into the one behind the pilot stand here to make the crosshairs icon comes up and click the wheel-

..and this'll be your view. The white dot is used as a 'crosshair'-

Or if you prefer the ventral position get in here-

But you'll only see grass til you're airborne-

For the record, pilots get into the other planes from these positions, don't waste time trying to get in the wrong side, you can't do it-

Fw190

Airacobra

Thunderbolt

Pe-2: See the first post in this thread to see how to get into the pilot's seat, it's a bit trickier than the others
