I'm glad to say multiplayer is alive and well, I connect to assorted IF multiplayer games every day, there's always about a dozen going and it's great fun, I'm trying to learn how to host some myself.
Meanwhile I stalk the existing ones and sometimes see Ironfront Fan Forum members like Careerevil out there busting bot ass..

..and inspired by his example, I try to follow suit-

I've seen you around a lot!  If you want to make a server go to multiplayer and on the bottom of the screen it should say new.  Select that and name your server and however many players you like on there, also don't forget to change from LAN to internet.  Then select your mission and start it!

I play with SimHQ once a week and with the Russian Arma2.RU guys whenever I can and a translator is available.

Would be interesting to play on some other servers as well.

Anybody can simply boot up IF and click the 'Multiplayer' button to get this typical list of all the non-passworded multiplayer games currently available that anybody can join, it's the best way for newcomers to get straight into the game and it's great fun..:)

Here's a typical human players list of you and your teammates, you can choose what you want to be (Rifleman, machinegunner, AT-guy, Sniper, Sapper, tanker, pilot etc),
then simply make your way to the objective and start zapping the AI bots with your mates-

This is a typical multiplayer map screen (your team is Russian in this one, ignore the eye candy coloured arrows), you start at HQ Base at top right, and the objective is the red circle south of it. (the objective randomly changes to a new one somewhere else after you've eliminated all the bots in the old one)

Notes:- Some vital info that newcomers need to know-
1- When the game begins hit the '< ' key (the one to the right of the 'M' key) a couple of times to cycle to the 'Side' comms channel at bottom left of the screen so that you'll be able to type messages to your teammates and they'll be able to type to you. (It'll stay fixed as 'Side' for the rest of the game, no need to keep resetting it).
Just hit '/' and type what you want to say and hit Enter to send it; some people use a microphone instead.
2- Even if you're not a tanker or pilot, you can still hop in a tank or plane and use it.
3- If the objective is a long way from your base and you don't fancy a long drive, there are quicker ways to get there such as teleport, paradrop, or train travel.
4- Don't worry about getting killed, you just respawn over and over.
5- Above all have FUN doing your own thing, you're under nobody's orders and can do whatever you like, just try not to kill too many of your own guys with friendly fire or you might get kicked off the game..;)

If anybody's got any multiplay questions ask them in this thread..:)

This is my preferred weapons loadout for most multiplayer games, a Sniper's rifle, 6x ammo clips for it, and 6x AT-grenades, it's a nicely-balanced selection for going in harms way.
Remember, whatever you begin the game as (rifleman, machinegunner etc) you can always change your weapons by rummaging around in an ammo crate to select or ditch whatever you want.
With your sniper rifles telescopic sight you can pick off the enemy at long range and they often won't even be able to see you.

But if they do see you and begin closing in like below, you can use the rifle as an ordinary rifle with its iron sights.
(Note:-although the AT-grens are primarily used against enemy armour, they also come in useful for throwing at infantry, they explode on impact unlike fiddly time-fused grens)
Incidentally this screenshot is from a multiplayer game this afternoon, I drove my Panther (blue rectangle) into battle and found it surrounded by Russki infantry (red dots), they damaged it with AT-grens so i bailed and fought on foot with my snipers rifle and my own AT-grens but was eventually killed.
Most of my teammates meanwhile were nowhere in sight, that's often the case with multiplayer, everybody is usually off somewhere too busy doing their own thing and will leave you hanging out to dry..:)

Sometimes. Here's a shot of the IF Multiplayer screen (open to all, non-passworded) taken half an hour ago (7:45pm British time)-

And here's a closeup of the left half of the screen, I've highlighted in red the two servers I go on most because they're FUN and are usually the ones with most people playing in them, although I do dabble in the others from time to time-

The right half-

Hey noobs- Each server has its own maps and different objectives and styles, and in some you can buy your own units which is fun, it's all a matter of personal preferences.
The number of players in a game varies all the time depending on time of day and time zones as they come and go; the most i've seen in a game at one time is 20, and players come from all over the world and can usually speak a smattering of english.
You can join most games at any time, you don't have to wait for one to end and a new one to begin..

Yesterday on FK server I saw up to 12x12 players. So public multiplayer little bit alive again. I even saw PoorOldSpike here. Glad you stop busting bot ass sometime.
If FK admins will fix little bugs and maybe give us few new missions, hope we'll have stable evening online on last pvp server.
Sometimes games on FK even seems to teamwork, as about half of players communicate each other.

I pop into the FK Hardcore game sometimes but I don't like it for these reasons-
1- There's no 3rd-person view and it makes you feel like you're playing with a paper bag on your head, unable to see what's going on around you except through a small vision slit.
2- The only unit showing on the map is yourself, there are no enemy and friendly units displayed on it at all!
And usually everywhere is silent, no shooting anywhere.

Yeah, man, I hate this games too! Here the reasons:
1 - there is no button "Kill all enemy"! It makes you feel like you're not a magician! And you can't see throught the walls! How do they play without all this staff?
2 - Enemy hiding and triying to kill me! I used to know there is enemy and I like then enemy die before he shoot at me. By the way all games I ever played enemy usually showes me his position before shooting. Especially games about war.

TYPICAL MULTIPLAYER SCREENSHOTS
These are from a non-hardcore multiplayer game I connected to today; remember noobs, just jump straight in and start having fun, you can do just as you please. And remember to cycle your comms channel to 'Side' with the '<' key so you can talk to people and they can talk to you (if they can speak english haha), you can type your words or use a microphone, it's a matter of preference.
In this game I took a snipers rifle to do some bot-hunting on foot, there were about 5 human players and we were all on the Russian side. The Germans were all AI bots.
I'm the red dot and 3 of my team mates are also nearby named in green, including one guy who's seized the castle in the centre. The blue dots are the German bots and to win we have to kill every one of them in the red circle objective area-

My view from the red dot, I can play with my sniper's rifle from here. Notice German paratroops reinforcing the town-

You can run mate..

...but you can't hide...BAM!

After downing several enemy I break through past this KT wreck to help my team mate in the castle-

And meet him inside-

More team mates arrive-

so we begin clambering to look for good vantage points-

Nice view..

Postscript- the game carried on and we picked off enemy patrols and halftrack drivers that came sniffing around, things stalemated so I eventually called it a day because I was pining for a tank, so I disconnected and joined another game and became a T-34 commander..[smile]
